In Luke 10:38-42, we find the story of Jesus and His disciples coming to the home of Martha and Mary for a meal.  This event would have required a great deal of preparation on Martha’s and Mary’s part.  However, verse 40 tells us  “…Mary, … sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. ‘Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.’”  (MSG)

Jesus responded by saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part (the priority), which shall not be taken away from her." (NAS)  We see from this story that there are many important, legitimate responsibilities in our daily life, but Jesus identified time with Him in His Word as the top priority.
 
Spending time with God should be the top priority of our daily life for several compelling reasons: 
 
First, we were created to have fellowship with God.  Gen. 1:27 tells us that God created us in His own image.  This is so that we can have an intimate relationship with Him.  No other created being has this privilege and joy.  Without this relationship we feel empty and unfulfilled.  It is in meeting with God daily that we can experience the intimacy and purpose for which we were designed.
 
Secondly, we need daily spiritual nourishment.  We cannot have a healthy spirituality without a regular time with God.  Just as we become weak and diseased without our necessary physical food, we also become weak and emaciated without our daily spiritual food.  Jesus said in Matt. 4:4, “Man cannot live on bread alone, but on every word that God speaks." (GNB)  We need regular, daily spiritual nourishment.
 
Third, a daily time with God is the key to spiritual maturity and development.  We were born again in order to become like Christ.   Rom. 8:29 says God’s will for us is that we  “…become like His Son.”  2 Cor. 3:18 tells us that it is by “beholding the glory of the Lord, [we] are being transformed into the same image." (ESV)  The objective of your daily Quiet Time is not to study about Christ, but to actually spend time with Him.  And in so doing we become like Him: "...they were amazed and realized what being with Jesus had done for them!"  Acts 4:13 
  
Fourth, a daily time with God is absolutely critical for service and ministry for the Lord.   2 Tim. 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work." (NLT)
